Our Coffee

Single origin means every coffee we sell comes from one specific farm, estate or cooperative. Not a blend of coffees from different places. It means we can trace exactly where your coffee comes from: the country, the region, the producer, the altitude and the process used.

It also means every bag has its own distinct flavour. Our Brazil tastes different from our Peru because they’re genuinely different coffees from genuinely different farms.

Speciality coffee is coffee graded 80 points or above on the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) 100-point scale. It represents the top tier of the global coffee supply chain, roughly the top 10% of all coffee grown worldwide.

Every coffee we roast is an SCA-graded speciality lot. We work with a world-class green coffee supplier who gives us seasonal access to exceptional coffees. We taste every lot before it’s roasted and only approve what genuinely stands out.

Pick the grind that matches how you brew:

  • Whole Bean – best if you have a grinder at home. Stays freshest longest and gives you the most control.
  • Medium grind – for V60, AeroPress, Chemex, Moka pot, cafetière and drip machines.
  • Fine grind – for espresso machines: Sage, La Marzocco, De’Longhi, Breville and pressurised baskets.

If you’re not sure, start with Whole Bean if you have a grinder, or Medium if you’re using a V60, AeroPress or filter machine.

Every order is roasted fresh on Monday and shipped the same week. Your coffee will never be more than 7 days old when it reaches you, anywhere in the UK.

We’ve roasted to this schedule every week since we started on the Isle of Seil, Argyll in 2019. It’s a rhythm we’ve never broken.

Yes. Our Decaf La Mariposa from Colombia is a single origin speciality decaf processed using the Sugarcane EA process, which removes caffeine without chemicals. Tasting notes of chocolate, nougat and apricot. Available in all bag sizes and as a subscription.

Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Our bags are resealable with one-way degassing valves. Press out the air before sealing. Avoid the fridge or freezer for bags you’re using daily as condensation can affect the beans.

Whole bean stays fresh for longer than pre-ground. If you’re buying in bulk, whole bean and grind as you go is the better option.

Home Equipment

We stock a range of home coffee equipment from brands we use ourselves: Sage (espresso machines and grinders), Hario (pour-over, scales and kettles), AeroPress (brewers and accessories), Comandante (hand grinders), Baratza (electric grinders) and Wilfa (grinders and brewers).

It depends on your budget and how hands-on you want to be:

  • Sage Bambino – best entry-level machine. Compact, fast heat-up, good results without much of a learning curve.
  • Sage Barista Express – built-in grinder, good for beginners who want everything in one machine.
  • Sage Barista Pro or Oracle – for those who want more control and consistently excellent espresso at home.

Not sure? Email us and we’ll give you a recommendation based on your setup.

If you want the best cup, yes. Pre-ground coffee starts going stale within minutes of grinding. A grinder lets you grind fresh for every brew, which makes a real difference to flavour and aroma, especially with speciality coffee.

For espresso, a Sage Precision Brewer or Wilfa Uniform is a solid starting point. For pour-over or AeroPress, a Comandante hand grinder or Hario Smart G works very well.

Yes. All of our coffee shop locations stock retail bags of our seasonal single origin coffees. You can also pick up equipment and accessories in Oban and selected Glasgow locations.

Hinba was founded in 2019 on the Isle of Seil, a small Hebridean island in Argyll, 30 minutes from Oban, connected to the Scottish mainland by the famous Bridge over the Atlantic. The name Hinba comes from Old Gaelic: In (land) and Ba (sea), meaning the island in the sea.

The values shaped on the Isle of Seil – the care, the precision, the commitment to traceability – are still the ones that guide every roast we do.
